Two Deaf women from Montreal, both in their sixties, were fatally struck by a train in Portugal while taking photos near a railway crossing. They were part of a group of four, and the two others with them were unharmed. The train conductor sounded the horn and attempted to brake but was unable to stop in time. Authorities say there was no possibility to avoid the collision. The two women died at the scene. The victims were well known in Montreal’s Deaf community. Global Affairs Canada confirmed the deaths and offered condolences, and officials are in touch with their families. The families have asked for privacy and expressed gratitude for the support from friends and their community.
