In Colombia, many people with hearing disabilities struggle to learn in schools due to the lack of teachers proficient in Colombian Sign Language (LSC). To address this issue, researchers from the University of La Sabana developed a robot that teaches basic signs, such as colors, in an interactive and engaging way. This robot uses artificial intelligence to recognize hand movements with over 90% accuracy and responds with gestures and lights. Users can practice signs either manually or randomly. The team is currently working to expand the robot’s vocabulary and plans to implement it in schools, hoping for government support to introduce it nationwide.

On March 29, the Adventist Ministry of the Deaf (MAS) held the first free medical operation exclusively for deaf people in Concepción, Chile. A total of 173 consultations were provided across ten specialties, all with sign language interpreters. The event aimed to break communication barriers and highlight the needs of the deaf community. Volunteers, interpreters, and members of APROAS participated in this significant effort. The initiative combined inclusion, service, and faith, and the organizing team hopes to replicate it in other regions of the country.
For the past five years, DeafWire has had Regional Reporters from different parts of the world sharing news from Deaf communities within their region. H3 World TV deeply appreciates them for their efforts in sharing stories with our global Deaf audience. As the DeafWire program will end in July and be merged with WorldSign Week, we thank the Regional reporters for their contributions to DeafWire.
