Top stories about the deaf:
DeafDigest mentioned a while ago that Nancy Barker,
a deaf Canadian doctorate student at University
of California, claimed being discriminated when
she asked for accommodations. She has finally
filed a formal complaint. As of right now the
university is withholding comment.
Ryogo Kitano, a young deaf Japanese man,
studying to become a hairdresser, has been
entered into the national hairdressing contest.
If he wins, he probably will get many hearing
clients.
A father of a deaf child has refused to allow
her to be implanted. As a result the
Kootenai County court (Idaho) has filed
claims of contempt against him.
The Department of Basic Education in Zaire has
admitted that shortage of Deaf Education teachers
have led to bad educational experience for deaf
students.
There is an issue in supermarkets about
disabled people using mobile scooters warning
the deaf shoppers to get out of the way only to
accidentally hitting them, causing injuries.

BANK WEB SITES DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THE DEAF
More and more banks have web sites that require
the customers to listen to certain words to prove
their own identities. This is a different way of
using logins and passwords. And there are no
captions with these words.
It is discriminatory against the deaf. And it
is even double discrimination when these same banks
refuse to accept relay calls from the deaf!

SIGNING OR GESTURING
You are walking on a sidewalk and you see two people
from far away. They are using their hands to communicate
with each other.
From far away you look at them very hard to see if
they are deaf people using ASL or if they are hearing
people just gesturing a lot with their hands.
Many hearing people speak without gestures, but
many other hearing people gesture a lot while speaking.
Can be confusing sometimes, are they deaf or hearing!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:
I still go to the gym to keep the doctor away!
A new SSP recently replaced my previous SSP who drifted into new social
life demands!
This is the second week this new SSP is helping out with transportation
and guidance around the gym.
One day at the gym, I needed to trade my outdoor shoes for gym shoes.
When I was ready, I stood up to give the SSP a hint that I was ready.
I looked at the front door and saw someone washing the window.
I waited longer and then I looked out the window again. This guy was
not washing the window, he was waving and waving while holding his gym
shoes!
It looked like someone had forgotten their key to enter the gym so I
opened the door.
It was my SSP who forgot his gym shoes!
I didn’t even know he went out to get his shoes.
Now we are talking about DeafBlind 101, let the DeafBlind person know you
are leaving!
When it is minus 20 degrees this winter, we could have a frozen SSP!
Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
