Top stories about the deaf:
Sandy Duncan, past leader in services for the
deaf in Pennsylvania, has departed us.
He is already missed by the deaf community
in Pennsylvania.
Skin communications? Yes if engineers at
Purdue University have their way. They want
deaf people to use devices on their skins
to help them communicate with the hearing.
Not exactly sure how it works.
A deaf Japanese senior citizen couple is
filing a lawsuit against the government
for forcing them to undergo sterilization.
The government, in the past, did not want
deaf couples to bear children. The
government is not too happy with the lawsuit.
Is there such a thing as a master data base
of potential patients (ie marketing the CI)?
Yes. Two people worked together to develop
such a database at Midwestern State University
in Wichita Falls, KS. This database continues
to this day and gets bigger and bigger.
A deaf person, shopping in a small town
discount store, was not aware of the closing
time. The PA announcement, warning customers
of closing time was useless. The store was
closed and the deaf person had to use
911 to text to call the police to get him out!

BRITISH TV BETTER THAN AMERICAN TV?
How many sign language programs do we see on
American TV programs?
Maybe zero; maybe one or two? It is different
in Great Britain.
The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust
has money to fund some TV sign language programs
for the deaf.
Deaf in Great Britain more lucky than we, the
deaf in USA?

A SERIOUS IDENTITY PROBLEM
A very hard of hearing person, who signs ASL
smoothly, has a problem.
Is he deaf like us because of his smooth
signing ASL? Or is he hard of hearing because
he can use the voice telephone easily. Or is
he hearing because he socializes easily with
hearing people.
Deaf or hard of hearing or hearing – a serious
identity problem!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:
I have been at the NAD Conference held in Hartford
Connecticut.
Being DeafBlind requires planning so I can get my
accessibility needs met.
This conference had interpreters available for me from 7:30 AM to
10 PM!
They even had SSP service to provide us sighted guides around
the conference and to our hotel room.
This is nice and we DeafBlind do not need to worry too much.
Less pressure
The interpreters just said, “we are here for you all day!”
So this was a good gesture of NAD for being very accommodating
to us who are DeafBlind.
Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
